What is LENT? For many Christians, Lent is a time of repentance, self-reflection, fasting, seeking to re-align with the Divine, journeying to the Cross with Jesus, and preparation for the coming of Easter. Christians often choose to give up something that separates them from their perception of God’s will for their lives, or to volunteer and give of themselves for others, or to take on new life-giving practices, or all of the above. The goal of every Christian who observes Lent is to finish the season at Easter a stronger and more vital person of faith than when s/he began the observance on Ash Wednesday. Some denominations even use this time to prepare new believers for their Baptism. Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter. Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means "spring." The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry. Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days because each Sunday represents a "mini-Easter" and the reverent spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection.

Lent candles are similar to the candles in an Advent wreath. You light one each week adding a new candle each Sunday during Lent until it’s Easter time. You can read Scripture, pray, discuss your Lenten journeys—whatever draws you closer to God! Lenten devotional material is available from any Christian bookstore, on Amazon, etc. In some traditions, during both Advent and Lent, there is one Sunday that has the Liturgical color of pink (or more specifically, rose) rather than purple. In Advent, the pink Sunday is called Gaudete Sunday. During Lent, the pink Sunday is called Laetare Sunday. It’s the fourth Sunday of Lent. Some use a red candle for the last Sunday /Palm Sunday to represent the coming Passion/Blood of the Crucifixion. Some add a black candle to be lit on Good Friday—the day we remember Christ’s crucifixion. A white or golden color candle can be lit on Easter Sunday to celebrate the joy & glory of the Resurrection--Jesus rising from the dead.
